The United States government shutdown is still ongoing, and disagreements between politicians continue to prevent a resolution. The Senate has approved a $1.6 billion spending package to assist the states battling opioid addiction, as well as a government funding measure preventing a shutdown in another few weeks. However, Democrat Chuck Schumer and his team have refused to approve any bill that does not also include protection for the so-called Dreamers. The White House and Republicans have offered to address immigration issues separately, but Democrats continue to demand action on this issue as part of the funding measure. Analysts have warned against any assumptions of a midweek budget resolution, and the increasing likelihood of a government shutdown in March is causing turbulence for financial markets. Despite President Trump’s insistence on a border wall and Republicans’ commitment to addressing other immigration concerns, Democrats are standing firm on protecting the Dreamers, which includes around 700,000 undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children. Schumer has demanded that the Senate negotiate with Speaker Pelosi, stating that she has greater leverage on this issue.
