NASA Shows All of Earth’s Water in One Sphere – How Little We Really Have | Toast

NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day for September 7, 2025 offers a striking visualization of how little water Earth contains. While oceans cover about 70% of the surface, they are extremely shallow compared to the size of the planet.

All the Water in One Sphere

If all the water on or near Earth’s surface were collected into a single sphere, it would have a radius of just 700 km—less than half the radius of the Moon. Smaller spheres illustrate the volume of liquid freshwater and the even smaller amount in rivers and lakes.

Scientific Significance

Researchers continue to explore how Earth’s water originated and how much might be hidden deep beneath the crust. This visualization emphasizes the fragility of our planet’s water resources.
