Samsung’s First Tri-Fold Smartphone – Features, Strategy and Competition | Toast

Samsung is preparing to launch its first tri-fold smartphone later this month or in October. The device folds inward from both sides with a central display. When folded, it looks similar to the Galaxy Fold at about 6.5 inches, and when fully unfolded, it expands into a 10-inch tablet-like screen.

Competing with Huawei and Motorola

Huawei recently introduced its Mate XTs with a Z-shaped fold, priced at 15,000 yuan (~2.93 million KRW). Motorola is also gaining ground with its foldable lineup, leaving Samsung under pressure to innovate.

Production and Strategy

Samsung is expected to produce about 50,000 units in the first run, focusing on countries with high purchasing power. Analysts say the purpose is less about sales volume and more about demonstrating Samsung’s technology and maintaining a premium image.

Market Share Shift

Samsung’s global foldable market share has fallen from 21% to 9% over the past year, dropping to third place behind Huawei (45%) and Motorola (28%). This tri-fold launch is seen as a strategy to reclaim market visibility.
