Hà Tân High-Tech Industrial Park: Affordable Living on Innovative Standards Set by Urban Sustainable Excellence

Headline: Vietnam’s High-Tech Farming High School: Significantly Cheaper and Better

In Vietnam’s central Ha Tinh province, there is a new agricultural school named after the local hero, Nguyen Tat Thanh, known to the world as Ho Chi Minh. The school reflects the current trend in Vietnam’s farming sector: moving into high-tech farming. It’s the Ha Tinh Vocational College of Agriculture and Forestry No. 2, which was built within two years with total investment capital of VND 115 billion ($5.18 million) funded by the central budget,Ha Tinh Province, Ha Tinh Department of Education and Training and the private sector; but the general investment cost was VND 190 billion ($8.23 million), including land acquisition and house price. With the collaboration of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the school now has a dormitory system for 200 students, a skill practice base area of 7,500 square meters, laboratories, entertainment areas, common rooms and administrative departments designed according to university standards. Each room has a private bathroom.
Constructed with state-of-the-art materials, the classrooms, labs and library all are equipped with necessary modern equipment, computers, internet and device libraries. The school has its own water source and the wastewater treatment system. The college also features an extensive arts center, a sports field, a book shop and a restaurant. Modern equipment facilitates education, but skilled teachers, who imbue their students with creativity, are what really fills knowledge into young minds. Recognizing this, the school is currently recruiting teachers with high levels of education and good professional qualifications. The college has a high standard: the trainers, who handle class instructions, are doctoral-level or equivalent, while assistant lecturers and laboratory assistants all have bachelor’s degrees.
The vocational school was built in order to narrow the gap between Vietnam and the USA in terms of agricultural technology, with Vietnam currently lagging behind the USA by 60-70 years in this field. “When countries join the free trade agreements with large agriculture exporters such as the US, the EU and Japan, the agricultural sector is greatly exposed to the advantages and disadvantages of the market economic system. To get through this stage fairly, Vietnam must speed up building a value chain in order to stay competitive in the international market,” underlined Le Anh Tuan, Director of the school. In May 2015, Le Anh Tuan led a delegation to visit the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service and Purdue University and other technical agricultural institutions in the US. “The purpose of the visit was to learn about the techniques and to introduce it in Vietnam,” Tuan said.
The Ha Tinh Vocational College of Agriculture and Forestry No.2’s model is aimed at making the whole farming process modern and automated, from breeding and breeding propagation to seedlings, sowing, agrichemical processing, harvesting, packing, storage, transportation and processing. However, in the current stage, the school is focusing on the mechanization tending stage, to save time, reduce costs and improve crop quality.
With 1.5 million domestic workers looking for jobs in Vietnam’s service and industrial sectors that cannot be filled by the current work force, the country must take full advantage of this human resource trend by training products that are competitive in both domestic and international labor markets.
