French President Emmanuel Macron will host Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin in a bid to renew Russia’s commitment to a 2015 peace accord for eastern Ukraine, reports The New York Times.
The meeting in Bucharest, Romania, is part of an intense European effort to revive the Minsk agreement, and according to Macron’s office, tension over Ukraine remains high. The meeting’s proposed date reflects an unusual speed — one French president’s office official described the planning as “vertical.”
Meanwhile, the US national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, will visit Kyiv later this week.
Certain elements of the Minsk deal, reached in 2015, have remained incomplete, whereby pro-Russian separatists have remained in de facto control over swaths of eastern Ukraine and have been linked, in 2014, to hacking attacks in the US election, per ProPublica.
