World Cinema. Paddington returns for a third movie, and the adaptation of the beloved children’s bear contrives a new and exploitable sundering of the familiar (as in America) from the exotic (as in Peru, where Paddington’s Aunt Lucy [a new character] lives). This friendly bear, voiced superbly by Ben Whishaw, arrives in Lima alongside the politically-minded Susan, played by surfing advocate and actress Rachel Wood, but their social justice crusade isn’t nearly enough to make Paddington 3 (directed by Daddy’s Home 2’s Sean Liebel) truly click since the framing of the nonsensically mean-spirited villains and caricatures is so retrograde and dated.
