On February 18, 2025, Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court has rejected an emergency appeal by former President and current jailed right-wing populist leader Jair Bolsonaro to halt the process of charges against him for his role in orchestrating a failed coup last year against the government led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The court’s unanimous decision allows the official proceedings and indictment to proceed, potentially leading to his imprisonment or removal from office. Judge Ricardo Lewandowski, who had already dismissed Bolsonaro’s initial request, stated that the suggestion to halt charges against Bolsonaro was a “manifest error of law.” The coup attempt led by Bolsonaro and his supporters resulted in the deaths of over 90 people, unleashed massive economic damage, and hindered Brazil’s democracy.
