Louisiana to Vaccinate 10,000 at State Stadium
In an effort to combat COVID-19 pandemic, Louisiana opened the first mass vaccination site on February 11 to vaccinate 10,000 people per week at a National Guard-run field house in Baton Rouge
The ‘field house’ has tennis courts, ample parking and 50 stanchions to separate lines for each age group, which will receive vaccines according to their priority under state guidelines.
Governor John Bel Edwards said the site will help the state reach its goal of vaccinating 70% of the adult population — some 2.5 million people — by July.
On average, it is taking about two weeks to book vaccination slots through participating pharmacy chains, such as Walmart, and this method would allow people to sign up over multiple days. The state’s goal is to get 55,000 shots in people’s arms per week, but the number has been consistently below 40,000, Edwards said.
“If we can get lots of shots in lots of arms quickly for a period of several weeks, that would have an exponential impact on our ability to defeat this virus,” Edwards said.
People who are eligible to receive the vaccine, under guidelines issued by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will be able to preregister starting Wednesday at 8am local time, at least 24 hours before they can arrive and get vaccinated. Each person will be asked to bring photo identification and proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or a utility bill, according to the National Guard.
