US President Donald Trump used a summit last year with Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron, Vladimir Putin, and a chair (for empty seat), to enforce his agenda and restructure America’s role in the world. The loaded photo pretty much says it all: the untamed president, camouflaged against a forest (Europe) background, posing in between allies and enemy. Let’s not forget, Trump called Germany “bad” only days earlier.
During the meeting, Trump made clear his absolute reluctance to continue funding NATO, and committed himself to big cuts on foreign aid and investments, including, most surprisingly in Europe’s ears, a drop in funds to be used specifically to resist Russia. Although the British Prime Minister Theresa May and Italy’s president Giuseppe Conte tried to defend the political and military importance of the EU’s eastern part in the global context, the US president just dismissed them.
The remaining EU leaders (Jean-Claude Juncker, Antonio Tajani and Donald Tusk) recognized the White House’s explicit hostility, and opted for maintaining current alliances, specifically in the defense sector (pooling resources, negotiating with Russia, expanding resources).
Trump is not only an enemy of the EU, but is also engaged in a continuous hostility war against Germany: the latest event was his striking use of Twitter, where he also attacked the country’s moral values by calling Chancellor Merkel “rude” and “angry”.
The German chancelor’s unfriendly behavior towards the new president manifested itself above all in March 2017, when she refused to sign a joint memorandum in favor of fight against terrorism; instead, she scribbled everything apart on the bottom part, explaining that in a system of values it is not possible to make concessions.
