“Trump & Congestion Pricing: A Planned Dustup in NYC”

“Trump Proposes Congestion Pricing in Manhattan”
According to a report from The New York Times, on February 18, 2025, President Donald Trump proposed a new congestion pricing policy to combat traffic congestion in Manhattan’s central business district. If implemented, the policy would charge drivers $17 for each car entering the area bordered by Harlem River Drive to the east, the Battery to the south, 11th Ave. (a distance of 4.5 miles) on the far west, and the East River to the north. The policy would benefit public transportation, biking, and walking, potentially reducing aircraft pollution and reconstructing the bus network. However, opponents are concerned about potential negative impacts on low-income neighborhoods, fewer parking spaces, and long-term effects on home prices. Cities worldwide face similar problems, and making Manhattan’s streets more like those of London and Stockholm could affect the city’s competitiveness as a global marketplace. Nevertheless, the congestion pricing policy remains under discussion, and it’s unclear whether it will pass through the U.S. Congress.
